Sharing a house, a room or even a bed every day and night, posting a constant flow of love declarations and shared selfies does not define true love in the least. True love cannot be defined by something as trivial as an Instagram post or a Facebook status message.
When you feel like you can’t breathe because your lover is not nearby, when they haven’t immediately answered your text or call, and you are afraid something bad might have befallen them, that is true love.
When you are worried about not being at your best when you are together, when you still manage to give each other butterflies, no matter how long it’s been since you were last together, that is true love.
When you always, always look out for each other because neither one of you wants the other to get hurt, or when you freak out that the other might be hurt any time something small and stupid happens, that is true love.
When you want to be one with your lover, but, at the same time, don’t want to suffocate them with your presence and have the strength to hold back, or when you are able to give them the freedom they need without losing them, that is true love.
When you can’t sleep at night while your lover is away because the bed is empty and way too big, or when you start counting the days, hours, minutes and seconds to the moment when you are reunited with each other, that is true love.
When you talk to your lover and actually listen to them, without judgement and with the will to help them, or when you are able and brave enough to tell them how you truly feel or what truly bothers you without being afraid they will slip away from you, that is true love.
When you find that perfect gift for your lover somewhere in the last drawer of a forgotten vintage store, or when you spend the perfect birthday with just a blanket and two sandwiches, but it feels like the best party ever, that is true love.

When you have a huge fight with your lover and, although they leave, they come back after a while just to make up and make it all better, or when you are still together, smiling, after having braved the worst that life could have thrown at you, that is true love.
When, because you managed to find and experience compassion and goodness in your lover, you become a better person yourself, or when you become kinder just because your lover makes you understand the pain you used to throw around, that is true love.
True love is bliss and abyss, heaven and hell, salvation and damnation, all wrapped into one. It makes you understand life, understand what it means to be alive and it makes you grateful for having been granted this opportunity.
