That time of the month is something we simply can’t get around as women, but there’s no reason we have to suffer through it. There are things that can be done to reduce the amount of pain and discomfort you feel.

1. Anti-Inflammatory Pill

You know the signs that your period is coming in the next few days. When those indications start to show up, do yourself a favor and pop an anti-inflammatory pill. There’s no need for anything too strong. Simple naproxen or ibuprofen will do. Taking painkillers before your period hits will help ease the pain when it does.

2. Avoid Specific Foods

The sad truth is that the foods you crave most during your period, like salty, sweet, and fatty treats, are the ones you actually should avoid altogether. Sugar, salt, and and saturated fats actually aggravate your period symptoms.

3. Enjoy Other Foods

You can treat yourself, however, with dark chocolate! It’s high in magnesium which gives you more energy and takes the edge off of your cramps. Also feel free to increase your intake of avocado, nuts, and seeds during your period because they decrease some of the hormones that can cause uncomfortable bloating.

4. Use a Heating Pad

If you have intense cramps, then you really want to invest in a heating pad. You will be able to relax a bit more and your cramps will be eased. Using a heating pad in combination with an anti-inflammatory pill will help your cramp pain go away faster.

5. Increase Endorphins

You may think that avoiding exercise is a good idea during your period, but think again. When you exercise, you boost your endorphins, which are the hormones that make you feel happy. So when you exercise on your period, you can combat some of that PMS negativity.

6. Orgasm

When you orgasm, your cramps are relieved and chemicals are released in your brain that behave as a natural painkiller. So whether you get it done with your partner or alone, make the time for it and you’ll be feeling better quickly.

7. Drink Up

You probably feel bloated enough during your period so drink enough water to avoid everything getting blocked up and making you feel even heavier. Drink at least 8 glasses of water throughout your day, and aim for more, if you can.

8. Sleeping Beauty

Your body will lead you to this naturally during your period, and you should follow its lead. When you’re on your period, your body is going through something intense and you need your rest. The more you sleep, the less bloated you’re likely to be so drift off.

9. Tea Therapy

During your period, take the time to try some specific teas like peppermint, ginger, and cinnamon. These specific teas are known to help with cramps, and they’re delicious, as well! Drink them hot or cold.

10. The Pill

If you have really painful and heavy periods, you may want to consider taking a contraceptive pill. It will ease your discomfort and even provide extra birth control in your daily life.

Your period will pass, as it does each month, but while you have it, use some of these tricks to make it as painless as possible.
