Sometimes a craving for unhealthy food hits you out of nowhere and feels really hard to control! This is totally normal and happens to all of us, but it’s not something that you want to give into each and every time because it will ruin your overall diet. Not to mention that you may notice issues with your skin and even your energy. Let’s face it though, none of us are perfect. The best thing we can do is to prepare to face these strong cravings as they come.
Use these 5 tips to help control your cravings:
#1 Know Your Triggers
In order to really help yourself avoid falling into the pithole of your cravings, you need to know what sets them off. Spend a week or so observing yourself and taking notes when your cravings hit. Write down what you were doing, how you were feeling, and what food was around you. Once you identify the triggers that lead you to indulge in your cravings, you’ll be able to situate yourself to avoid them or at least be more aware of them.
#2 Eat a Good Breakfast
The easiest way to let cravings overtake you is by not feeding yourself properly. Make sure that you start your day with a filling, but healthy meal. Breakfast sets the tone for your whole day. When you start with energy and nutrients, your decisions throughout the rest of the day will lean in healthier directions, naturally.
#3 Keep Variation in Your Diet
If you’re eating the same few foods each and every day, you’re bound to get bored and splurge on some kind of junk food when the craving hits. Try to include a wide variety of foods in your diet. This means eating lots of different fruits and vegetables, and not limiting yourself from anything. You can eat the things you want, as long as you do it in moderation. Knowing you can eat as you please will make you less likely to give in to cravings in the long run.
#4 Drink Enough Water
Staying hydrated throughout the day is one of the best things you can do in your fight against cravings. Your body often confuses hunger with thirst. If you feel that pang and craving, ask yourself if you’ve been drinking enough water. The answer is probably no. Keep a bottle with you, refill it throughout the day, and avoid cravings just by being properly hydrated.
#5 Do Other Things
Food is not the only thing to think about in your daily life, but self-control can be very hard when a craving pops up. Stay busy and engaged in activities that you enjoy. Add exercise to your daily routine and keep healthy snacks around you. Being distracted will make ignoring cravings easier.
Controlling cravings is one of the hardest parts of maintaining a healthy diet. Don’t pressure yourself, use these simple tips to help shape your lifestyle.
