The trick to losing weight and keeping it off is ensuring that you’re burning enough calories each day and week. Keeping track of that can get tricky so it’s a helpful idea to simply pick up a few behaviors that will help you burn extra calories without even thinking about it.

If you’re serious about keeping your calorie flow going all day, try some or all of these 30 tricks:

#1. Switch out butter and margarine: both butter and margarine are full of fats that will not help you burn any calories. What you can do is switch to olive oil, spreads like tahini or hummus, and use banana or applesauce when you bake.

#4. Stop drinking and smoking: these unhealthy habits cause more cortisol, the stress hormone, to be released in your body. This in turn, leads to more fat and weight gain.

#5. Avoid ‘low-fat’ foods: these options often contain extra chemicals that are just as bad for your body as fatty choices.

#7. Restaurant choices: don’t stop eating out just because you want to lose weight. It’s good practice to adjust to the real world, by picking healthier menu options and asking for swaps like oil instead of butter, or dressings on the side of salads.

#8. Eat spicy: when you spice up your food, it helps burn more calories naturally. Start adding more black and cayenne pepper to all foods you cook and eat.

#9. Combine protein with vegetables: vegetables are great, but to really get the most out of them, pair them with some healthy protein like egg or a slice of turkey.

#12. Avoid belly fat: not only is belly fat annoying and unattractive, but it can be very unhealthy, as well. To avoid building it up, cut out processed foods and sugar.

#13. Revamp metabolism: sometimes the machine needs to be re-oiled. Switch from the standard 3 meals each day to more, smaller meals to keep your metabolism working well.
