From exotic surgery techniques or fancy SPA treatments, to pills and creams that boast incredible results “in just X minutes,” there is a whole industry out there advertising beauty products for women over a certain age. Although some of these products and procedures might have passable good results, they will never completely live up to their ads.

The real way to go about keeping yourself young inside and outside is to change some things in the way you do everyday things. Let’s take a look at some of the things you can improve.

#1. Eat the rainbow!

The more colors you have on your plate, the better. And we are not talking here about artificially colored food, but about natural products, like the following:

- red – tomatoes: they contain lycopene which fortifies the skin against sun damage.

- orange – oranges: the C vitamin they contain boosts the production of collagen.

- yellow – bell peppers: the brighter the color, the more antioxidants they contain.

- green – leafy greens: the high load of vitamin A makes for soft and supple skin.

- blue – blueberries: they are loaded with anti-aging and anti-inflammatory compounds.

- purple – beets: the antioxidants and fiber help prevent early wrinkles, boost stamina and eyesight.

#2. Sleep enough!

Yes, we know you are tired of hearing this over and over again, but getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night is EXTREMELY important to maintaining a healthy and young body. During sleep, the body is repairing everything that gets damaged during the day. So, if you don’t get enough sleep, things will get only partially repaired and, eventually, something is bound to break down.

#3. Never forget the water!

Many people don’t even realize that they’re constantly failing to drink enough water, thus putting themselves in a permanent semi-dehydrated state. It’s like with sleep: not enough water – no well-functioning body. Water aids in digestion and absorption, flushes out toxins, helps maintain the right electrolyte balance, and so on. Therefore, if you want to look and feel young, never forget to drink enough water.

#4. Be happy!

Today this is not an easy thing to ask for, but you should try to maintain a positive attitude towards yourself and your surroundings. The more stressed and morose you are, the more you are affected by the poisons created by stress (the dreaded free radicals). Smile and be good to yourself and to others. Your body will thank you for it.

#5. Stay away from too much sun!

While some sun exposure is to be desired and even necessary for everybody, try to avoid exposure to the sun during the hours with the maximum UV light (between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM). If you have to go out, apply a sun mask of at least SPF 30. Extended direct exposure to UV rays not only speeds up the skin’s aging process, but can also cause serious problems (like skin cancers).

#6. Muscle up!

After 30, adopting a daily exercise regimen is to be desired. Without it, you can lose up to 10% of your muscle mass every ten years. It will also help you with maintaining a good posture, balance and a certain radiance that you cannot get from anything else (well, maybe sex, but that’s a different discussion). You will need to do both strength and cardio exercises, and be sure to add enough protein to your meals (about 1/3 of every meal should be some sort of protein – animal or vegetable).
