We all dream of having beautiful, shiny, strong locks of hair. This can actually be achieved by keeping a well-balanced diet, and by caring for your hair correctly. So, let’s take a look at some of the things you should definitely not do to your hair, unless you want it to look bad.

#1. Endlessly postponing the trim or cut

Easily tangled, full of single knots, split, frizzy, looking untidy and without any shape? If your hair looks like that, it’s way past time to do something about it.

#2. Dyeing your hair yourself

Unless you are a haircare professional, don’t do it! Just don’t! You will ruin your hair, and then you will need professional help anyway. DIY is good in other areas, but not in this one.

#3. Brushing or styling your hair while it’s still wet

Wet hair is much more sensitive and prone to breaking than dry hair. And, if you use a hair curler or straightener on it while wet, you have the perfect recipe for disaster. The resulting steam may damage it beyond repair.

#4. Never cleaning your hairbrush

A dirty hairbrush is like a Petri dish. Because of all the dead skin it collects from your scalp, in time it will host an impressive number of bacteria, which you transfer back to your scalp while brushing.

#5. Obsessively washing your hair, using very hot water

By washing your hair too often or with very hot water, you wash away the natural oils that keep your hair in good condition, making it brittle and dry. Normally, you want to wash your hair twice a week, or three times if it is extremely oily.

#6. Using conditioner instead of shampoo, or not using it at all

This one is simple. You cannot put oil in your car’s gas tank and expect it to run. The same goes for your hair. You cannot use a conditioner instead of a shampoo. The shampoo cleanses, the conditioner moisturizes.

#7. Not changing your haircare products if your hair changes

Every type of hair needs specific care. If you change your hair in any way, be it bleaching, coloring, or anything else, you will need to use a different set of haircare products.

#8. Brushing your hair too often, starting from the roots

Don’t fix it if it isn’t broken. Meaning: don’t brush your hair unless it needs brushing. And if you do, start brushing progressively. Brush the ends and work your way up to the roots. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck with a gigantic knot.

#9. Tying your hair back very tight too often

Tying your hair up too often, especially if you tie it tightly, is literally pulling it from its roots. Try alternating the way you tie your hair back or, even better, don’t tie it back every day.

#10. Staying out in full sun for too long

UV radiation affects not only the skin but also the hair. We use sunblock for the skin, but we often forget about protecting our hair. If you need to be out in the sun for longer stretches of time, wear a hat or a scarf.
