Whether it was a long-term relationship or love that never bloomed, trying to remove someone from your thoughts can be one of the most difficult things to do. The expectations and fantasies that you attached to the person will still exist in your thoughts, and detaching from them takes real work.

Try these 10 things to help you stop thinking of him:

#1. Stay rational

When your heart is broken, the hardest thing to do is to think rationally, but it’s what must happen. Your mind will be racing with ideas of why things happened as they did that are simply illogical. Sit down in a quiet space and get clear in your mind. Thinking rationally will set you on the path to getting him out of your thoughts.

#2. No communication

If you actually want to stop thinking about him, you need to make sure that you have no contact with him whatsoever. That means that you do not contact him and that you do not answer any calls or messages that he sends you. Resist the urge to engage if you want to claim your mind back.

#3. Delete reminders from your life

Just as you don’t want to talking to him, you don’t want to be seeing reminders of him in your daily life. Remove anything from your space that he gave you or that actively makes you think of him. Photos and keepsakes need to go. If you don’t want to get rid of them for good, store them out of sight.

#4. Stop searching social media

First thing’s first, block him from social media! Then make the conscious decision and practice self-control to not search his social media for news of what he’s doing. That will only magnify his presence in your thoughts.

#5. Get distracted

Let one of your hobbies take up your spare time, or find a new one. Whether you like to workout or play music, allow yourself to be fully absorbed in something that will help distract you from thoughts of him.

#6. Treat yourself

Now that you’re single, make the point to pamper yourself and take extra care of you. Book an appointment at a spa or get a massage. Invest in how you feel and how you look so that your thoughts come back from him to your own well-being.

#7. Take on a new you

Consider making a change that will help you feel like a new you. Get a special haircut or invest in a new style of wardrobe. You are no longer the person whose mind is consumed by him, you’re a new version of yourself!

#8. Date for fun

A fast way to get your mind off of him is to put it on someone else! This doesn’t mean you need to search for a deep love right away. Seek out fun and romantic experiences that will help remind you of how much you offer on your own.

#9. Gather friends and family

Stop obsessing over your own thoughts. Go out with friends and family and let them share their news with you. Focusing on the issues and news of your other loved ones will allow your brain a break from thinking about your loss.

#10. Forgive him and yourself

If you want to truly let go and free your mind, you need to forgive him for anything that is still bothering you and forgive yourself for spending so much time thinking about him.

When you focus your energy elsewhere, you will find that your mind moves on in no time.
