Maybe each woman experienced abdominal cramps and pain during periods. But sometimes these symptoms may become apparent in the middle of the cycle, when one of your ovaries releases an egg.
This process happens almostly each month. After periods, new egg matures in the ovary inside the sac-like structure called follicle. In the midway of your menstrual cycle it travels from the ovary to fallopian tube in order to give you chance to conceive.
Some women don't feel any discomfort during ovulation, while others experience one-side pelvic pain, which can range in severity and duration. Sometimes unpleasant sensations are accompanied by bloody vaginal discharge and mild nausea.
Exact causes of mittelschmerz (German word for painful ovulation, often used by medical specialists) are still unclear. It is supposed that before releasing of the egg, follicle stretches ovary's membrane, causing painful sensations.
When the follicle ruptures, it releases not only the egg, but also blood and fluid that may irritate abdominal lining, leading to cramps and pain in the lower part of the belly.
Though mittelschmerz is not serious condition, it may be uncomfortable and annoying, especially if lasts more than several minutes.

Here are the best ways to relieve painful ovulation effectively:
#1. Apply a heat pad – warm compresses can help you relax tension in the muscles and alleviate abdominal cramps.
#2. Take a bath – soaking in hot bath may be a perfect way to ease your painful ovulation. It acts like heating pads, increasing blood flow, relaxing tense muscles and reducing discomfort.
#3. Try relaxation techniques – it's not so easy to stay calm, when suffering from pelvic pain. But in fact, symptoms may become worse, if you’re agitated, because it leads to excessive muscle strain. Progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing and some yoga poses can be helpful in reduction of the mid-menstrual pain.

#4. Drink a tea – sounds too simple, isn't it? But that's true, sometimes hot chamomile tea is the best treatment for painful ovulation.
#5. Take painkillers – there is a wide variety of over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen and naproxen, which can help you get rid of mittelschmerz. Be aware that regular consumption of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can result in stomach ulcers and internal bleeding.
#6. Speak about birth control medications – if pain between the periods is unbearably uncomfortable for you, your doctor can prescribe you oral contraceptives. These hormonal pills prevent ovulation, so you wouldn't feel pain in the middle of the menstrual cycle.
