Becoming a mother is one of the greatest things that will happen to you in life, but sometimes the after effects of pregnancy are not as glamorous as you’d hope. One of the most common things to happen after giving birth is diastasis recti. This is when the two separate chunks of muscles in your abdominal area that meet to keep it tight, get yanked apart during pregnancy.
The condition of diastasis recti is when that separation doesn’t naturally heal as it should after you give birth. So you will find that you look as if you are still pregnant.
If you’re not sure if this applies to you, follow this simple test:
#1. Lie flat on back, with feet on floor, and knees up.
#2. One hand under head, the other on top of belly.
#3. Push your fingers into your belly, gently without causing pain.
#4. Raise your upper back and head as if doing a crunch.
#5. Feel around your stomach for separate sides by moving fingers back and forth.
What can I do if I have Diastasis recti?
Depending on the extent and type of your diastasis recti, there are some natural ways to help it, including specific exercises. To find out if these methods may work for you, or if you will likely need professional treatment, visit your doctor.
What not to do
Though it may seem logical to start trying to perform standard abdominal exercises to help with your diastasis recti, this could actually make your problem worse. Typical moves like crunches and sit-ups, and many Pilates-based abdominal moves must be avoided with diastasis recti.
Does abdominal binding work?
A practice that has been used for decades, all over the world, abdominal binding will not cure your diastasis recti on its own. While it may help to keep some of your muscles from falling further out of place, it cannot recreate the connection between the muscles separated in diastasis recti.
