Experts from Barcelona compared the Mediterranean diet with the addition of olive oil and a diet designed to prevent cardiovascular diseases. The study involved 3,614 volunteers aged 55 to 80 years, suffering from type 2 diabetes.

Participants were asked to consume a minimum of 500 milligrams of omega-3 fatty acids per day. Recommendations were followed by 75% of volunteers. During 6 years of study, 69 participants were diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy.

The researchers took into account the factors that could affect the results. The researchers found that volunteers who consumed the recommended amount of omega-3 fatty acids had a 48% reduction in the risk of diabetic retinopathy compared with those who did not follow recommendations.
