What is chiropractor? Who needs chiropractic adjustment? And does it really work?
The term “chiropractic” consist of two Greek words: “cheir” is “hand” and “praxis” is “practice”.
So, chiropractic is a treatment method, performed by hands.
It was first involved into the healthcare practice in the 1800s.
Nowadays there are about 95000 licensed doctors of chiropractic all over the world.
There are special chiropractic colleges, in which practitioners study biomedical science, public health and investigations during four years.
Chiropractors focus on the treatment of musculoskeletal problems, like lower back pain, sciatica, sports injury, fibromyalgia and arthritis, believing that these disorders can impair your well-being, affecting nerves and pressing on the neurological tissues.
During your first visit to chiropractor, specialist will ask you about your symptoms and case history with all details. After that you’ll be examined carefully with palpation techniques and tests, like X-rays.
Chiropractic adjustment includes different manual manipulations, such as abrupt pressure on the special areas, used to release gas from the joints, relieve pressure and ease unpleasant symptoms.
Sometimes additional therapies, such as massage, ice application, electrical stimulation and stretching may be recommended.
In most cases chiropractic procedures are safe. Temporary fatigue, headache and local discomfort may be present several days after adjustment.
Stroke, cauda equina syndrome and herniated disk are very rare complications, reported after the chiropractic care.
However it’s worth staying off chiropractic intervention, if you have advanced osteoporosis, spine cancer or increased risk of stroke.
High number of studies found manual therapy beneficial not only for back pain, but also for headaches (including neck-associated headache and migraine), joint conditions in the limbs and whiplash-related problems.

But effectiveness really depends on your individual situation. Manual therapy isn’t the ideal method for all people. If you don’t feel improvement of the symptoms after several visits, this type of treatment might be not appropriate option for you.
Chiropractic is often covered by insurance, so don’t forget to ask about the costs.
It’s really important to tell your chiropractor about all medicines and supplements, you consume and surgery, you’ve ever had.
