To correctly interpret the body language signals of a man who’s possibly interested in you, you need to also pay attention to the context or to other environmental signals. It also matters how well you know each other at that point. Some guys use more of their body than others to flirt.
Being able to figure out what type of guy you are dealing with and what their specific body language might mean can help you successfully differentiate between habitual signals and genuine interest signals.
#1. Mirroring behavior
Mirroring body language is not limited to the situation in which a woman likes a man. It works the other way around too. The man will notice the level of interest communicated by the woman through her body language and will try to mirror it, thus responding to her actions.
If a man senses a lack of interest from the other person, displayed by crossed arms or a serious demeanor, he will instinctively try to mirror that body language. He will continuously pay attention to how you’re behaving and will constantly try to recalibrate his body language to mirror yours.
Contrary to popular belief, mirroring body language is not a sign of playfulness, but a feedback mechanism to help achieve better communication.
#2. Maintaining eye contact
Guys try to maintain eye contact with you to figure out your level of interest and to show you their level of interest. Looking away tells them that you’re either not interested or that you’re shy. By maintaining eye contact, you show them that you are interested in them, so they can move on to the next step. Don’t forget that shy guys might avoid eye contact even if they are interested in you, simply because they are too nervous.
#3. Adjusting their appearance
Just as a woman interested in a man might lick her lips, men are usually smoothing their tie, or brushing their hand through their hair. For both sexes, the gestures mean the same thing – “Look at me, I’m interested in you”.

#4. Fixing their hair
Usually, when a person shows concern for their appearance in front of another person, there is a good chance they are showing an interest in that person. Both women and men will brush their hand through their hair or fix some aspect of their appearance to look nicer.
#5. Constantly fixing their socks
In the past, suits were a constant in any man’s wardrobe. Recently, however, suits have become more of a dress for special occasions. This is true for all types of “dress clothes”. Therefore, socks are the most frequently worn item in a guy’s wardrobe, so don’t be surprised if their elastic fails on occasion and they spend half the date adjusting or pulling their socks up.
#6. Holding a great posture
He’ll hold his back straight when he’s around you. By this, he is trying to show off his body, his muscles and constitution, hopefully within reason, thus letting you know that he is a physically fit male specimen.
#7. Checking you out
Men will keep trying to look at your womanly features, more or less blatantly. Whether you catch them looking or not, this is a way in which they show that they’re attracted to you.
#8. Spreading his legs
Yes, seriously. Hopefully, he still has his clothes on when he’s doing this gesture. The reason for this move is for him to “show off” his endowment down there. It might seem shallow, but it comes from the animal part of a man’s brain. It is simply part of the human mating behavior.
#9. Standing with hands on hips
This pose will expose his hip size and suggest body strength. According to experts, it is also a display of confidence.
#10. Playing with buttons
They could be buttons or a zipper. He fidgets and keeps touching the item repeatedly, showing you that you’re making him feel a little nervous. It is OK though. This is a temporary behavior. His nervousness will pass with time.
#11. Touching his face
When guys feel attracted to you, repeatedly touching their own face is a nonverbal sign to show their nervousness and the increase of their sensitivity level. Their body basically goes into “I like you” mode. According to some experts, repeating this action also plants the idea of initiating kissing in the other person’s mind.
#12. Playing with a glass
If you are out to dinner and he starts playing with a glass, rolling it around or sliding it back and forth, it is a sign of attraction. Grabbing and playing around with anything circular is the body’s way to signal to the other person that they are interested in getting to know them better.
#13. Perching on the edge of their seat
It shows a combination of being nervous and feeling an urge to get closer to you, which, at this point, he is probably fighting off pretty hard. If he crosses his legs, the leg on top will be pointed in your direction.
#14. Guiding you
It is usually considered a gesture of good manners, but it is actually just his way to show other men and you that he is in charge of the situation and no other men need interfere. You’re his, and you are taken care of. As a bonus, it allows for touching, which is always a desired goal.
#15. Lending you his coat or sweater
This is probably one of the oldest tricks in the book. It is a sign of being connected, protected, joined. Obviously, the scents and the closeness of the two bodies is important, but this is mainly a protective and reassuring “we are one now” gesture.
#16. Parting his lips for a bit
This will usually happen when you first make eye contact. It’ll only last a moment, though, so you’ll need to be very focused to be able to notice it.
It appears especially with shy men speaking to someone they find attractive or consider out of their league. It is a sign of intense nervousness. They are terrified of what the other person is thinking about them. Without the feeling of intense attraction towards you, they would have no reason to be nervous and they would not stutter.
#18. Face lighting up
This is the result of his eyes opening wider, his brow rising, his lips parting and his nostrils flaring up, as if he were taking a deep breath.
#19. Whispering into your ear
#20. Dilating of the pupils
This is a signal that appears in both sexes. When a guy is interested in you, his pupils will dilate a bit. Just make sure he is not wearing any contact lenses, because these may, sometimes, make pupils appear dilated, even if the person is not actually interested in you.
#21. Physically closing in
When he is interested in you, he will unconsciously try to close the gap between you, by reducing the physical distance between the two of you.
