When you catch a cold, the last thing you possibly want is to catch the same cold twice. However, health experts claim that it is possible to contract two colds at one time. Virologist Lance Stewart found evidence that individuals who experienced viral respiratory infections were infected with a second virus simultaneously.
Stewart claims that double viral infection can make a person feel worse than he would feel with just one virus. Or an affected person may not experience any differences from how he would feel with a common cold without any complications.
Human well-being will depend on the mix of virus diseases that he had. For example, if he was infected with two rhinoviruses at once, he might experience the same symptoms. But if he is sick with cold virus and an influenza virus, these infections will affect his body differently and he will probably feel bad.
Dr. Amanda Porro is a head of the Pediatric Care Center at Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami, who claims that if a person experiences just one type of infection, he becomes more vulnerable to a second infection, because his immune system weakens. While his body is trying to combat the first infection, another may take root.
But that depends on a variety of factors, especially the state of health of a patient. Dr. Stewart says that sometimes people just cannot get a second infection, when they already have a single virus in their body. When you catch an infection disease, your immune system becomes stronger and it protects you from other viruses.
In other words, if your immune system is strong, you will overcome infection fast and easy. But if your immune system is weak, you might combat the infection over several weeks instead of couple of days. That is why it is very important to boost your immune system to prevent negative health consequences.
Health experts add that is very difficult for your body to struggle against two infections, so you might need more energy.
But eventually, it is almost impossible to find out if you had two colds at once or not. Our bodies come in contact with plenty of microbes and viruses every day so it is usually strong enough to fight infections well," Amanda Porro say.
