Feeling sad and depressed from time to time is natural for everyone. It's especially common among older adults, who have lost beloved one, moved into retirement or got a diagnosis of serious disease.
But it's not a normal part of aging process or annoying character trait.
Actually, researches found that most seniors are satisfied with their lives, even though they have more health problems than in youth. Scientists say that there are some biological features behind the age-related depression. It was found that in late adulthood, vessels in the brain become stiff that can restrict blood flow to certain parts of the brain tissue and result in vascular depression.
Brain chemistry is also a bit different in those, who suffer from depression. This condition is associated with reduced production of neurotransmitters, called serotonin and norepinephrine.

Persistent depressive disorder manifests in milder symptoms, which last at least two years.
Minor depression is the lighter form of this psychological disorder, which doesn't last as long as persistent variant.
The good news is that it's completely possible to get rid of depression with special medications and psychotherapy practices.
Your doctor may prescribe you antidepressants and recommend cognitive behavioral therapy. You may also find relief in complementary methods, like yoga, regular exercising and herbal supplements. But don't forget to consult with medical professional before taking any medicines. It's also worth staying off alcohol, if you really want to fight off your depression effectively.
