Normally, the skin in our underarm area is similar in colour to the rest of our bodies. Sometimes, though, the skin in the armpit appears to turn a darker hue. There are several factors linked to dark underarms, such as genetic predisposition, race, health, and sometimes, even skin irritation from hair removal.

This usually isn’t indicative of anything more serious but may cause some discomfort to people because of how this looks.

Some homemade remedies could help lighten the skin. We suggest trying one that has toothpaste listed as one of the ingredients.

When it comes to toothpaste, it has proven to be one of the most popular bases for do-it-yourself treatments. Not only is it effective when used for its primary purpose, that is, cleaning and whitening our teeth, it’s also a good weapon against blackheads, pimples and darkened armpit colour, and can be used on the skin and fingernails.

To be on the safe side, avoid using a coloured toothpaste on your skin because it may contain some chemicals that can irritate the skin. Also, do not use teeth whitening toothpaste, since it may contain some bleaching agents that are harmless for our teeth but can cause unwanted skin discoloration.

So which toothpaste should you use to treat dark armpit skin? The answer is simple: plain white-coloured paste with less fluoride in it (the lesser, the better).

On to the remedy itself. You’ll need your toothpaste tube and a fresh lemon. Cut your lemon in two halves. Squeeze a pea-sized portion of the toothpaste on the skin of your armpit, then use one half of lemon to scrub the paste in.

Leave for about 20 minutes, then wash it off. Repeat this procedure at least thrice per week. Another crucial part to remember is that you don’t want to apply this remedy immediately after you shave, also avoid it if you have any wounds or irritations in your underarm area.
