In order to further investigate the way your gut plays a role in your ability to lose weight, a study was performed. Two groups were formed from stool sample results. Participants were split into groups who had more Prevotella bacteria and those who had more Bacteroides.

Both groups followed a high-fiber diet to see how much weight would be lost depending on gut bacteria. It was shown that those with more Prevotella bacteria had better success on the high-fiber diet. It was shown that they lost more weight, trimmed their waistlines more, and had an easier time of maintaining their weight loss after the diet.

The significance of this study lies in what it means for dieting in general. Diets are not one size fits all. Each individual is unique and so is their gut, which means that dieting needs to become something much more personalized in order to yield true results.
