Typically, you’d get a lot of prescriptions for painkillers to relieve and treat sciatica. However, since the pills tend to only temporarily mask the symptoms, those suffering from sciatica are often looking for more natural and long-term alternatives. That’s where chiropractic, acupuncture, stretching and ayurvedic remedies come in.

Persistent sciatic pain makes simplest daily tasks impossible to complete. The painful sensation is caused by the compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in our bodies that runs from the pelvis down to the feet. Painful sensations usually occur in the lower back, the buttocks and right down to the foot.

Doctors may opt to treat lingering sciatica with painkillers or injections straight into the spine. This kind of treatment isn’t always the most preferred route, so we present to you a list of safe, natural and effective alternatives.

#1. Chiropractic. There’s evidence that chiropractic manipulation relieves back pain in people who suffer from sciatica. The National Institutes of Health has conducted a survey and found that not only chiropractic is most commonly used to treat back pain, but it also is effective, since out of the 74% of those who turned to this practice, 60% have found it to be beneficial. Chiropractic believes that our health and nervous system are affected by the problems in our body structure, mainly the spine, and employs spinal adjustments to relieve the pain.

#2. Acupuncture. Coupled with conventional treatment methods, or used on its own, acupuncture can relieve sciatica pain. Needles are inserted in specific points of the body to restore and balance the flow of the energy, reduce pain, accelerate nerve repair, and stimulate the release of pain-relieving endorphins.

#3. Exercise. With the help of a physiotherapist, you can design exercises that will be effective in relieving pain. One of the quickest and easiest such exercises is to lie flat on your back, bend your knees and bring them up to your chest. The right kind of stretching exercises will increase flexibility in the lower back and mobilize the sciatic nerve.

#4. Osteopathy. Research has proven that osteopathy is one of the most effective non-invasive sciatica pain relief methods. It is a combination of several treatment methods, such as massage, exercising and spinal manipulation.

#5. Ayurveda says herbs like guggul, garlic, vistinduk, nirgundi, erand are good for sciatica pain relief. Their pain-relieving qualities are enhanced by massage, applying steam to the affected area, and enema therapy (that is, when waste material is removed from the body).

#6. Homeopathy offers several sciatic pain relief options, for instance, chamomile, colchicum (to treat left-sided and right-sided sciatica, respectively), bitter apple, St John’s wort, and iris. Chamomile is good for treating left-sided sciatica, colchicum for right.
