After heart disease, cancer kills the most American women. It is a grim but true fact. Of all the types of cancer, breast cancer is the most prevalent, one out of eight women having to battle it during their lifetime.
There are some things that you cannot change in any way (like the having the BRCA 1 or 2 gene), but there are also some things that you can do to minimize the chance of getting breast cancer (like giving up refined sugars, known as some of the main activators of cancer, exercising more and adopting a nutrient-rich, natural diet).
Take a look at the list below to familiarize yourself with what’s known as the “good food.”
They contain Gamma Tocopherol (which stops the activation of the AKT enzyme, important for the survival of the cancerous cells) and good cholesterol (which helps the body regulate estrogen levels in women and men, and also blocks the breast cancer cells’ estrogen receptors).
Broccoli and other cruciferous veggies contain sulforaphane – an anti-inflammatory compound that acts against the chemicals which cause breast cancer and inhibits the growth of existing breast cancer cells.
Although the causal chain is not yet known, it is still good to add mushrooms to your meals, especially if you are in your premenopausal phase. Mushrooms are rich in vitamin D and boost your immune system.
#4. Sweet potatoes
As their bright orange color shows, they are very rich in beta-carotene (like carrots), and contain carotenoids - compounds used to regulate cell growth, cell defense and cell repair.
#5. Green tea
The polyphenols in the green tea are strong antioxidant compounds, with significant anti-breast cancer properties.
It is the main source of zeaxanthin and lutein carotenoid duo, with an important role in lowering the risk of breast cancer. It also has the highest content of folate (a B vitamin that reinforces the DNA). Kale and asparagus are from the same family.
#7. Olive oil
We are talking about the extra virgin olive oil, not the cooking olive oil, made from olive pits. Its cancer-fighting properties stem from the anti-inflammatory phenolic compounds, which help reduce the growth rate of malignant cells.
Studies have shown that drinking coffee is especially effective in lowering the risk of antiestrogen-resistant estrogen-receptor (ER)-negative breast cancer, probably because the antioxidants in coffee help protect the cells from damage that may later lead to cancer.
Choline, a neurotransmitter building block, is found in the highest concentration in eggs. This substance is vital for the healthy development and function of all cells in the body.
These small berries are packed with antioxidants, which prevent the formation of inflammation-inducing molecules.
